Secretary of State Husted Fights Flawed Voting Records

Posted by Ohio Republican Party on February 14, 2012

According to a recent nonpartisan study from Pew Research, nearly 24 million voter registration records across America are incorrect, or simply out-of-date.  Unfortunately, this is an issue that, under the failed leadership of Jennifer Brunner, has been left to fester here in Ohio.  Today, Jon Husted is proactively working to clean up Ohio’s database of voters so that fairness and integrity can be ensured in our election process.

Presently, in Wood County, there are 106% as many registered voters as there were people in the 2010 Census.  Morrow County has 26,018 registered voters and the Census says there are 25,834 voting-age residents.

Today’s edition of USA Today highlighted the efforts being made by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted to help alleviate these discrepancies.

“The problem is particularly bad in swing states, where parties, campaigns and others canvass the state registering voters, even if they're already registered, and often collecting inaccurate information, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted said. ‘Everybody's registering you here,’ he said. ‘We don't really have control of that.’

“Husted is asking the U.S. Justice Department for guidance on how to clean up the rolls before the presidential election without violating motor voter. ‘It undermines voter confidence and creates the potential for voter fraud where people could act and vote on their behalf,’ he said.”

Secretary of State Jon Husted rightly sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder last week seeking to discuss the elements of federal law which prevent Ohio from maintaining an accurate voter database.  The question remains whether Barack Obama’s administration will heed Ohio’s calls for fair elections before the most critical campaign of our lifetimes.
