Republicans have a strong heritage of African American leadership in Ohio: the first African American county commissioner, the first African American state legislator, the first African American statewide elected official and the first African American lieutenant governor. Throughout our party's 150-year history, Republicans were the first to abolish slavery, recognize blacks as U.S. citizens, propose voting rights for African Americans, advocate for civil rights legislation and appoint African Americans to serve at the highest levels of government, including Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.
Our party is continuing that legacy by addressing the issues of importance to African American communities: lower taxes, public safety, school choice, faith-based charity, health care and equal opportunity. The Ohio Republican Party's Campaign America program is designed to promote these agendas to minority constituencies and recruit qualified Republican minorities to run for public office.
