COLUMBUS - Ohio got the snub from Barack Obama again this week, this time getting second-class seating at the Democratic National Convention.
Primetime coverage of the convention showed Ohio in the cheap seats far behind states seated on the main floor such as Arkansas, Montana, Vermont and even Guam, which offers zero electoral votes.
"I guess the Obama campaign was serious when they said they don't need Ohio," said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett. "Of course, Sen. Obama only carried five of 88 counties in the primary, so it's not hard to see why the Ohio delegation wasn't seated in the mosh pit. Maybe this is punishment for Ted Strickland saying he can't deliver the state for Obama or suggesting the senator doesn't offer a lot of substance."
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, "David Plouffe, Obama's campaign manager, held a briefing at the Colorado Convention Center for reporters from key battleground states at which he suggested that the Obama campaign believes it can win without Ohio."
"As Ohio goes, so goes the nation," added Bennett. "It's pretty arrogant of the Obama campaign to think they can write off the Buckeye State and win the White House. Ohio's only been wrong three times since Lincoln, and two of those times featured Ohioans on the ticket. If Sen. Obama wants to take those odds, we'll make sure he gets a good seat at President McCain's inauguration."
