New Web Ad: 'Accountable'

Friday, November 20, 2009

(Columbus) - With new developments unfolding today in a Cuyahoga County corruption scandal involving two prominent Democratic officeholders, the Ohio Republican Party released a new web ad targeting Gov. Ted Strickland's refusal to take action.

As a candidate for governor in 2006, Strickland repeatedly vowed to "hold people accountable," "set a higher standard of conduct" and "send a very clear message that we will clean our own house."

According to The Plain Dealer today, "Federal prosecutors have charged two building suppliers with bribing public officials who match the descriptions of Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora and Auditor Frank Russo. ... The charges are the latest to implicate Dimora and Russo in a sweeping corruption probe that has identified the two longtime political allies as primary targets."

Gov. Ted Strickland recently told The Plain Dealer he's "too busy" to call for the resignations of Russo or Dimora, despite similar calls from other Ohio Democrats.  U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said he and the governor would not speak out because "neither of us live in Cuyahoga County."

"Ohioans are still waiting on Gov. Strickland to get a backbone and show some leadership," said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine.  "The governor promised to enforce a higher standard of ethics in government, but he continues to turn a blind eye to a major scandal involving prominent leaders of his own party.  If the Democratic leadership of this state has any credibility left at all, they'll immediately and relentlessly demand these resignations."
