Dealing contracts for contributions at the expense of taxpayers
COLUMBUS - Ohio Republican Party Spokesman John McClelland today issued the following statement regarding Mary Jo Kilroy's crooked contracting process for the Huntington Park baseball stadium:
"Mary Jo Kilroy's favors to her Big Labor contributors continue to hurt taxpayers," said McClelland. "She has benefited from over $1 Million in support from labor organizations, and it shows."
According to her FEC reports, Mary Jo Kilroy has benefited from over $1 Million in campaign contributions and independent expenditures, including a direct contribution from the International Painters and Allied Trades Union deposited on January 17th, 2008 (FEC).
Mary Jo Kilroy recently voted to reject a non-union bid by a painting contractor, prompting an attorney for The Painting Company to remark, "It appears that Mary Jo Kilroy has an agenda to exclude the merit shop contractor." (Barbara Carmen, "Nonunion Bidder Striking Out Again," Columbus Dispatch, 2/29/08)
Mary Jo Kilroy also voted to reject a combined low bid for plumbing and climate control from another non-union contractor (TP Mechanical), preferring to hire an out-of-state union shop and cost the taxpayers an additional $215,000. That Union shop, WG Tomko, had numerous legal problems that were overlooked, including tax evasion by its president and failure to pay pension benefits to a soldier serving in Iraq. (Barbara Carmen, "Trial to Weigh Ballpark Bid Bias," Columbus Dispatch, 3/24/08)
"If she's dealing contracts to her labor allies and costing taxpayers a quarter million dollars right here in Franklin County, imagine what she would do in Washington with the federal budget. Ohioans need strong leadership in Congress, not someone who would treat the office as her own personal favor factory," added McClelland.
