COLUMBUS - April 23rd is Tax Freedom Day, meaning that every dime Americans have earned this year has gone to pay their annual tax burden. For almost four full months this year, Americans have put in hours upon hours of hard work just to have that money go straight to the IRS. Ohio Republican Party Spokesman John McClelland made the following statement:
“If Americans are working well into April just to pay off their taxes in 2008, imagine how long they’ll be working if the Democrats enact their punitive tax-and-spend policies. Since the Democrats apparently believe Americans are under-taxed, this ‘holiday’ is a reminder of just how out-of-touch they really are,” said McClelland.
As the Tax Foundation points out: “In 2008, Americans will work 74 days to afford their federal taxes and 39 more days to pay state and local taxes. Meanwhile, buying food requires 35 days of work, clothing 13 days, and housing 60 days. Other major categories are health and medical care (50 days), transportation (29 days), and recreation (21 days).”
