The Ohio Democrat Party's Misleading Attack Ad On Sen. McCain

Monday, April 21, 2008

COLUMBUS - Ohio Republican Party Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine today released the following statement on the Democrats' misleading radio ad distorting John McCain's record:

"The Democrats have concocted a hit-and-run ad filled with distortions and false attacks. It's too bad they did not include any of their own economic solutions but it's easy to understand why. Both Democrats running for president favor massive tax increases and outrageous government spending that would hurt middle-class families and small businesses across Ohio. While the Democrats distort and smear with more of the same old attacks, John McCain is offering solutions and addressing the concerns of the American people," said DeWine.

The Ohio Democrats' Ad Claims That Sen. McCain Has No Plan For Struggling Homeowners:

Announcer: "His ‘Big Idea' For Struggling Homeowners? Skip The Family Vacation - Get A Second Job To Pay The Bank." (Ohio Democratic Party, "‘More Of The Same': Ohio Democrats' First Ad Of The Presidential Campaign Highlights John McCain's Out Of Touch Views On The Economy," Press Release, 4/21/08)

But Sen. McCain Has Offered A Comprehensive Plan To Help Homeowners:

Sen. McCain Offered A Plan To Assist Deserving Homeowners Who Are In Danger Of Losing Their Homes. Sen. McCain: "Under the HOME plan I have proposed, our government will offer these Americans direct and immediate help that can make all the difference: If you can't make your payments, and you're in danger of foreclosure, you will be able to go to any Post Office and pick up a form for a new HOME loan. In place of your flawed mortgage loan, you'll be eligible for a new, 30-year fixed-rate loan backed by the United States government. Citizens will keep their homes, lenders will cut their losses, and everyone will move on -- following the sounder practices that should have been observed in the first place." (Sen. John McCain, Remarks On The Economy At Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, 4/15/08)

The Ad Claims That Sen. McCain Offers "Nothing For The Middle Class":

Announcer: "After Twenty-Five Years In Washington, These Are John McCain's Big Ideas: More Homes Foreclosed On; More American Jobs Shipped Overseas; More Tax Giveaways To Millionaires. Nothing For The Middle Class." (Ohio Democratic Party, "‘More Of The Same': Ohio Democrats' First Ad Of The Presidential Campaign Highlights John McCain's Out Of Touch Views On The Economy," Press Release, 4/21/08)

But Sen. McCain Has Offered Tax Relief For Middle-Income Americans:

Sen. McCain Will Double The Tax Exemption For Dependents, Providing Greater Tax Relief For Families. Sen. McCain: "Our tax laws and those who enforce them should treat all citizens with respect, whether they are married or single. But mothers and fathers bear special responsibilities, and the tax code must recognize this. Inflation has eroded the value of the exemption for dependents. I will send to Congress a reform to increase the exemption -- with the goal of doubling it from 3,500 dollars to 7,000 dollars for every dependent, in every
family in America." (Sen. John McCain, Remarks On The Economy At Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, 4/15/08)

The Ad Claims That Sen. McCain Backs "Unfair Trade Deals" That Ship Jobs Overseas:

Announcer: "McCain's ‘Big Idea' For Workers? More Unfair Trade Deals That Send Good Jobs Overseas." (Ohio Democratic Party, "‘More Of The Same': Ohio Democrats' First Ad Of The Presidential Campaign Highlights John McCain's Out Of Touch Views On The Economy," Press Release, 4/21/08)

But Free Trade Has Created Good Jobs Here In America And Promoted U.S. Economic Growth:

The Washington Post: "NAFTA [Did Not] Cost The United States Any Jobs, On Net, Though It Might Have Created A Couple Of Hundred Thousand." "Among nonpartisan economists, the consensus (as summarized in a 2004 Congressional Research Service report) is that while the bulk of increased trade between the United States and Mexico since NAFTA probably would have occurred anyway, the agreement's positive effects have increased over time. NAFTA did not cause the current U.S. trade deficit with Mexico ($64 billion last year, out of a $13.3 trillion U.S. economy). Nor did NAFTA cost the United States any jobs, on net, though it might have created a couple of hundred thousand. The agreement contributed marginally to the shifting of workers from some less competitive sectors to others." (Editorial, "Trade Distortions," The Washington Post, 12/3/07)

  • USA Today: "Modifying or scrapping NAFTA wouldn't create jobs or more skilled workers. The idea raises false hope and seeks to scapegoat Mexico and Canada." (Editorial, "Bashing NAFTA Misses Real Reason For Factory Job Losses," USA Today, 2/29/08)

Trade Has Grown From 10% To 29% Of The U.S. Economy As U.S. Exports Have Accounted For 25% Of Economic Growth. "U.S. exports grew 12% in 2007, and the U.S. Department of Commerce reports that since the first General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade, in 1948, U.S. total trade as a percentage of gross domestic products has risen to more than 29% in 2007 from less than 10%. According to a Heritage Foundation study ‘The U.S. is the world's largest exporter. U.S. exports amounted to $1.6 trillion in 2007 alone and those exports generated 25 percent of U.S. GDP growth.'" (Pete Du Pont, Op-Ed, "Protection Racket," The Wall Street Journal, 3/26/08)

Exports Support Six Million U.S. Jobs In Sectors Across The Economy. "America's exports of goods sold abroad--electrical machinery, chemicals, plastics, agricultural products, medical and scientific instrumentation, for example--support six million American jobs. Exports of services account for another five million jobs.. And foreign-owned companies operating in the U.S. directly employ five million American workers, including 16,000 in Ohio by Honda, 5,400 in South Carolina by BMW, 6,000 by Nokia and 15,000 by Nestlé." (Pete Du Pont, Op-Ed, "Protection Racket," The Wall Street Journal, 3/26/08)
