Statement from Chairman Bennett regarding the decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

(Columbus) - Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett issued the following statement today regarding the decision by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to vacate the stay of the panel's temporary restraining order:

"This is a victory for the integrity of Ohio's election. The court has ordered Secretary Brunner to comply with the district court's ruling and immediately develop an adequate system of verifying newly registered voters.

Secretary Brunner's announcement on Tuesday that she will voluntarily comply with the district court's order suggests she knew this ruling was coming. Unfortunately, her delay in providing this matching system leaves little time for election officials to act on questionable registrations. Secretary Brunner should immediately issue a new directive providing clear guidance on how the boards should handle the mismatched voter data.

All parties in this case should be given an opportunity to review the directive before it's distributed to county election officials.

Once again, Jennifer Brunner has wasted valuable taxpayer dollars only to have her partisan agenda rejected by a court of law. Her shameful actions to disenfranchise Republican absentee voters, block the transparency of early voting and refuse the proper verification of newly registered voters have rightfully damaged her credibility as a nonpartisan election administrator. She is destroying the public trust in Ohio's elections system."
