"Working on this budget is more important than participating in a parade or eating hot dogs at an outdoor cookout." - Ted Strickland
(Columbus) - Gov. Ted Strickland took his face out of a bowl full of Jell-O today long enough to hypocritically demand that state lawmakers work "around the clock" on a solution to Ohio's budget crisis.
Strickland lectured lawmakers for being too "casual" with budget deliberations, sarcastically offering to bring them "pizza and pillows" as they work toward a deal.
The governor's remarks came after he appeared at a Jell-O eating contest in Ontario over the weekend, despite saying last week that he and lawmakers should skip July 4th celebrations to get the budget passed.
"Working on this budget is more important than participating in a parade or eating hot dogs at an outdoor cookout," said Strickland. (Dayton Daily News, 6/29/09)
"How ironic that Ted Strickland has his face stuck in a bowl full of Jell-O while Ohio burns," said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine. "Maybe he can bring the dessert to the budget hearings and answer some questions about the obvious flaws in his gambling plan. Then again, that would require some actual leadership on his part."
