(Columbus) - Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine issued the following statement today on the passing of longtime Ohio Republican Party leader Martha C. Moore:
"Martha provided unparalleled leadership and counsel to our party for more than 50 years, and generations of Ohio Republicans are indebted to her service. She was a role model for women in politics, and, at a time when women were fighting for equality, she led our state committee to create county Republican Party chair positions for women in all 88 counties. Her advice was often sought by candidates and elected leaders from City Hall to the White House. I speak for thousands of Republicans across our state and nation when I say our party has lost a goodwill ambassador and, more importantly, a dear friend. She will be greatly missed."
Martha Moore was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in 1991. The daughter of Ohio Congressman C. Ellis Moore, she served as a member of the Republican State Central and Executive Committee for 52 years and as the party's vice chair from 1968 to 2003. She represented Ohio on the Republican National Committee for 35 years, and she was honored by the Ohio delegation to the Republican National Convention as their second choice for President of the United States at the 1972, 1976 and 1984 conventions. In 1984, she was elected regional vice chair of the Republican National Committee by the Midwest States Association.
Moore received a bachelor of arts degree from Muskingum College and a master's degree from The Ohio State University. She retired from Muskingum College as a professor of speech. She is a longtime personal friend of President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush.
