With the one year anniversary of the Democratic takeover of Congress, public polls show their leadership has driven approval of both Democrats and Congress to all-time lows.
Record Low Approval of Congress
Following the Democratic takeover, Nancy Pelosi stated, “Today the American people voted for change, and they voted for Democrats to take our country in a new direction.” There is certainly a new direction, but apparently not one Americans support.
Confidence in Congress is at an all-time low in the history of the Gallup poll.
Numerous polls show Congress at record low approval ratings. ABC/Washington Post shows approval of Congress is at the lowest point this year, and is also the lowest since 1995.
Other polls show their record lows in approval:
“A paltry 11 percent rated Congress positively, beating the previous low of 14 percent in July.” – Zogby 9/07
“Gallup Poll finds Congress' approval rating the lowest it has been since Gallup first tracked public opinion of Congress with this measure in 1974.” – Gallup 8/07
Disapproval of Democratic Leaders Increasing
Nancy Pelosi recently stated, "I don't approve of Congress, because we haven't done anything that — we haven't been effective in ending the war in Iraq. And if you asked me in a phone call, as ardent a Democrat as I am, I would disapprove of Congress as well."
Most Disapprove of Congressional Democrats s While Democrats might blame Republicans for the low approval of Congress, ABC/Washington Post shows discontent is high specifically with the Democrats in Congress.
Pelosi Disapproval Growing Among Key Groups ¨ Approval of Nancy Pelosi has fallen 18-points to 43% since March among San Francisco Bay Area voters, and has fallen 16-points to 48% among California Democrats (Field Poll, 10/21).
