Chairman’s Update 10/11/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last week’s vice presidential debate showcased the proven, principled leadership that Vice President Mike Pence has provided to President Trump’s Administration. Kamala Harris refused to answer questions on whether Joe Biden would pack the courts, and she continued with her political games by telling the American people she will not get vaccinated if President Trump is the one who urges Americans to do so, undermining confidence in the health professionals who are working to develop a coronavirus vaccine. In 2019, Harris was ranked the most liberal of all 100 senators. There is no doubt that she plans on bringing her radical, progressive agenda to the White House.

With 23 days to go until Election Day, we must continue fighting for President Trump’s re-election. Under a Biden Administration, our taxes will be raised, our police will be defunded, and America’s energy sector will be destroyed. We must re-elect President Trump for Four More Years.

Early voting started last week. Whether you will be voting early in-person or by mail, it is important to know who is on the ballot. You can find the Republican slate card at slate.ohiogop.org.

If you are interested in signing up to be a poll worker, visit voteohio.gov for more information. You will get paid for your time while helping to defend democracy and make this election a successful one. You can also sign up to join Team Trump’s Election Day Team to assist with grassroots operations and Getting Out The Vote (GOTV). DeWine Visits 4 Cities to Highlight Rise in COVID-19 Cases

On Friday, Governor DeWine spoke with media across the state about the recent rise of COVID-19 cases throughout Ohio.

“What we’re seeing across the state is many cases are coming from social gatherings- parties, people getting together, not wearing masks, not keeping distance. We’re seeing bad trends. We can’t let this virus flare up,” said Governor DeWine.

On Thursday, Governor DeWine released Ohio’s updated Public Health Advisory System map. New health data compiled by the Ohio Department of Health found that 18 counties currently have a very high risk of exposure and spread (Level 3): Ashland, Butler, Fayette, Hamilton, Lawrence, Madison, Mahoning, Marion, Mercer, Montgomery, Muskingum, Pike, Portage, Putnam, Richland, Ross, Scioto,  and Trumbull.

“We have 18 Red counties, which is more than we’ve seen since the week of July 23,” said Governor DeWine. “Additionally, there are 58 Orange counties this week, the highest ever. 96% of Ohioans are living in a Red or Orange county. The virus continues to spread quickly throughout the state, and we need to continue staying at home when sick, wearing a mask when out, and keeping at least six feet between you and those outside of your household.”

A county-by-county breakdown outlining the presence of COVID-19 in all of Ohio’s 88 counties can be found on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System’s website.

The Ohio IP Promise seeks to make our colleges and universities magnets for innovation and entrepreneurship by establishing a clear path to commercializing intellectual property. All the state’s public universities are part of the partnership as well as the University of Dayton and Case Western Reserve University.

Yost Announces New Milestone in Study of Opioid Addiction

Attorney General Dave Yost announced an enrollment milestone was reached in the genetic study of opioid use disorder undertaken by his Scientific Committee on Opioid Prevention and Education (SCOPE). SCOPE launched an unprecedented study last year aimed at identifying the genetic factors that make some individuals more susceptible than others to developing an opioid addiction. The study could help prevent some people from developing an opioid addiction in the future.

Recruitment of study participants in underway in the emergency departments of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. UC has now reached the initial milestone of enrolling 100 patients.

“Why is it that two people can take the same drug in the same dosage and only one becomes addicted?” Yost said. “We think genetics will help us understand why, and we want to get that powerful information into the hands of physicians to help stop opioid addiction before it starts.”

Chairman’s Update 10/04/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last Tuesday’s debate further highlighted the stark contrasts between President Trump and Joe Biden. Throughout the debate, President Trump held Biden accountable for a career full of failed policies. Ohioans appreciate President Trump’s Promises Made Promises Kept agenda, and know that he truly puts America First. As a career politician, Joe Biden’s only accomplishments have been to ship millions of jobs overseas to China and raising taxes. As Vice President, he presided over one of the worst economic recoveries ever, and will be disastrous for our economy going forward. The choice Americans will face on November 3rd is clear.
On Friday, we all learned of the president and first lady’s positive covid-19 test results. I hope you will all join me in praying for President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s speedy and complete recovery.
There are just 30 days left until Election Day. Our electoral system would not function properly without the help of poll workers. On Senate Floor, Portman Praises Nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett for Supreme Court, Calls for Fair and Thorough Confirmation Process

Last week on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Rob Portman discussed the recent nomination by President Trump of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. He noted her nomination was consistent with Senate precedent when the presidency and the Senate are controlled by the same party during an election year. In addition, Portman expressed his belief that Judge Barrett will prove well-qualified to capably fill the role as a nonpartisan judge who does not legislate from the bench. Highlighting her impressive background as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, a law professor at Notre Dame Law School, and a working parent to seven children, Portman said that he looks forward to his one-on-one meeting with Judge Barrett as part of the evaluation process by the Senate. In addition, Portman urged his Democratic colleagues not to malign Judge Barrett’s character in an attempt to discredit her from the court the way they did to Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation process.

“Not only were these fraudsters bombarding Ohioans with illegal robocalls, they were also peddling a bogus pitch and demanding upfront fees,” Yost said. “I want this case to serve as a warning to others who knowingly play a role in facilitating robocalls scams – we will continue to aggressively pursue and prosecute all parties involved.”

Chairman’s Update 9/27/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last night, President Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacant seat left on the Supreme Court by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barrett will be only the fifth woman to ever serve on the nation’s highest court, and will do so with great deference to the Constitution. A successful student, lawyer and judge throughout her legal career, along with her dedication to her family, Barrett has already shown Americans she is capable of it all.

Democrats have tried for four years now to obstruct President Trump’s goals. Democrats in the Senate will try to hinder our democratic processes for their own gain. These are the same Democrats who, in the 2016 election year, supported President Obama’s own Supreme Court nominee. President Trump is following precedent by moving to fill the vacant seat, and Americans deserve a fully staffed court of nine as soon as possible. Ohioans can rely on Senator Portman to take Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination into thorough consideration, and with a Republican majority in the Senate, I look forward to the rest of his colleagues doing the same.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

Governor DeWine Announces Nursing Home Indoor Visitation

Governor DeWine announced two new health orders that will allow for indoor visitation at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and intermediate care facilities in Ohio.

Intermediate Care Facilities:

The Ohio Department of Health issued the Director’s Order to Limit Access to Ohio’s Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and to Permit Visitation. Intermediate care facilities for Ohioans with developmental disabilities can resume indoor visitation beginning on Monday, September 28, if safety standards outlined in the order are met.

Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities can begin allowing indoor visitation on Monday, October 12. This date was selected to allow adequate time for the facilities to prepare their physical plants, adjust staffing levels, update visitation policies, and communicate expectations with residents and families.

Indoor visitation at nursing homes and assisted living facilities should only resume if certain safety standards are met. These standards will be outlined in a forthcoming public health order.

When visitation resumes, a Long-Term Care Facility Dashboard will be added to the COVID-19 data dashboard at coronavirus.ohio.gov where users can access facility-specific visitation information.

Chairman’s Update 9.20.20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Vice President Mike Pence in Zanesville to celebrate Ohio workers. The crowd was filled with Ohio’s working men and women, many of them employed by the energy industry and likely to lose their jobs under a Biden Administration. Joe Biden’s policies will put millions of Americans in the unemployment line as he plans to raise taxes, eliminate private health insurance, and seeks more government intervention in all of our lives. The Vice President made it clear that Americans need another Four More Years of our incredible president, who has cut taxes, provided help for small businesses and families in tough times, and who is working to make our economy stronger than ever once again.

On Friday, I was saddened to learn of the passing of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She spent much of her life working toward gender equality within the law, fighting for equal pay and equality in the workplace. Justice Ginsburg was a force, and she leaves behind a great legacy.

Portman Statement on Supreme Court Vacancy

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s vacancy:

“In the more than two dozen vacancies on the U.S. Supreme Court during a presidential election year in our nation’s history, the sitting president made a nomination in every single case.  Leader McConnell has said that he will hold a vote on any nominee President Trump sends to the Senate, and I intend to fulfill my role as a U.S. Senator and judge that nominee based on his or her merits. The president was elected in 2016, in part, based on a commitment to nominate men and women to the judiciary who would fairly and impartially apply the law and protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, not advance public policy goals by legislating from the bench.  Likewise, in both 2016 and 2018, the American people have re-elected a Republican Senate majority to help President Trump fulfill that commitment.

“In 2016, when the vacancy occurred following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, I said ‘the president has every right to nominate a Supreme Court justice … But the founders also gave the Senate the exclusive right to decide whether to move forward on that nominee.’ Since the 1880s, no Senate has confirmed an opposing-party president’s Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year.  In contrast, when the presidency and the Senate are controlled by the same party, the precedent is for the president’s nominees to get confirmed. In the 19 occasions that a vacancy has occurred when the President and the Senate are of the same party, the Senate has confirmed the nominee and filled the seat in every instance but one.  I look forward to seeing who President Trump plans to nominate and thoroughly assessing his or her qualifications for this important role.”

Governor DeWine Signs COVID-19 Liability Protection Bill

On MondayGovernor DeWine signed House Bill 606 into law. House Bill 606, sponsored by Representative Diane Grendell, ensures civil immunity to individuals, schools, health care providers, businesses, and other entities from lawsuits arising from exposure, transmission, or contraction of COVID-19, or any mutation of the virus, as long as they were not showing reckless, intentional, or willful misconduct.

It also shields health care providers from liability in tort actions regarding the care and services they provide during this pandemic unless they were acting recklessly or displaying intentional misconduct.

House Bill 606 was supported by several associations, including the AICUO, CCAO, Inter-University Council of Ohio, NFIB, Ohio Association of Community Colleges, Ohio Business Roundtable, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Council of Retail Merchants, Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Hospital Association, Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association, the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, Ohio Metro Chambers Coalition, Ohio Municipal League, Ohio Restaurant Association, Ohio School Boards Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Ohio’s Superintendent Association and Ohio Township Association among others.

Lt. Governor Husted Focuses on Expanding High Speed Internet

Lt. Governor Jon Husted continues to press for expanded access to high-speed, broadband internet for more Ohioans. With hundreds of thousands of Ohio households left behind, the DeWine-Husted Administration has made expanding broadband a top priority. The issue has been further brought to light during the COVID-19 crisis as many students are learning from home and may fall behind without access to online lessons. The new broadband grant, announced by the Lt. Governor, is giving districts, many of them in rural Ohio, a boost to ensure continued learning opportunities for Ohio kids.

Yost Requests the Removal of “Cuties” from Netflix

Attorney General Dave Yost, along with attorneys general from three other states, sent a letter to the CEO of Netflix last week requesting the removal of the controversial film “Cuties” from the streaming service. The film repeatedly shows children in a sexualized manner, even showing the creation and publication of child pornography.

“In this era where we are fighting a seemingly never-ending battle against human trafficking, this film is counterproductive – it whets the appetites of those who wish to harm our children in the most unimaginable ways,” Yost said. “I vehemently opposed the continued streaming of the movie and request that it is voluntarily removed.”

You can read the full letter here, and learn more about Yost’s ongoing fight against trafficking and exploitation here.

Treasurer Sprague Calls Additional Support for Small Businesses Impacted by COVID-19

On Thursday, Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague called for at least $100 million in Ohio’s remaining CARES Act allocation to be used for the creation of small business grants. The grants would provide much-needed support and relief to Ohio’s job creators severely impacted by the ongoing pandemic.

“For more than six months now, Ohioans have confronted COVID-19 with courage and resolve – two characteristics indelible to the Buckeye State,” said Treasurer Sprague. “However, the long-term effects this pandemic has on our economy remain unpredictable. With thousands of small businesses across the state closed or operating at a limited capacity, now is the time to utilize this federal relief to support Ohio’s small businesses and the families who depend on them.”

The proposal has already garnered support from several of Ohio’s leading business associations, including: the National Federation of Independent Business (Ohio), the Ohio Business Roundtable, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and the Ohio Restaurant Association

Kennedy Touches 10 More Counties This Week
Justice Sharon L. Kennedy spent another great week traveling Ohio – touching 10 counties and heading into the final stretch of touching all 88 for a second time in 2020.
Sharon began her week doing something she loves – shooting trap at the beautiful Cardinal Center in Morrow County.  After that it was a whirlwind week of: emphasizing the importance of voting down the ticket at home in Butler; rallying Lincoln Day Dinner guests in Darke; urging supporters in Logan County to tell their family and friends about the importance of this year’s race; speaking to Rotarians at the Northeast Cincinnati Rotary Club about the Ohio Judicial System And You; and addressing the current JoAnn Davidson Institute Leadership Class about the W5-H formula for success. In between she stopped to thank volunteers in Greene County and knocked doors in Preble, Hardin, and Darke Counties.
“One of the best parts of my job is traveling our beautiful state – seeing old friends and making new ones, but it’s always special to come home,” said Sharon as she addressed the Butler County rally attendees. “As I look into this crowd, I see family. People that have stood beside me since my first campaign in 1998 for the trial court. I am humbled by the support and love I have received from all of you over the past 20+ years. Now, I ask for your help once again. To share my story of service, tell your loved ones just how important this Supreme Court race is and remind them to vote all the way down the ballot – whether from their kitchen table or their polling location – for a Kennedy on November 3rd.”

Chairman’s Update 9/13/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

With only 50 days left to go until Election Day, it is important we continue fighting to re-elect President Trump. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem visited our great state last week, and I had the privilege of attending several events with her throughout Ohio. The purpose of her visit was to help campaign for the president and to see the strong support he has right here in the Buckeye state. From a Westerville Women for Trump event to a Cleveland economic roundtable discussion, Governor Noem saw just how enthusiastic Ohioans are about re-electing President Trump and how his policies have positively impacted our communities. The support for him out here could not be more apparent.

Americans have a choice in November between a President who continues to lead our Great American Comeback and who has proven he will always put America First, and a candidate whose radical policies will cripple our economy. We must continue reminding Ohioans about what that choice truly means for the future of this country, and how it will affect all of our lives. Let’s keep working full steam ahead to re-elect President Trump for Four More Years.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

On CNBC, Portman Discusses Support for Targeted COVID-19 Relief Package

Last week on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Senator Portman discussed his support for the targeted COVID-19 relief package.  While Senate Democrats voted to block and refused to even debate this bill, Portman voted for the targeted legislation because it is focused on the areas of agreement between Republicans and Democrats: increased testing, additional funding for schools and universities, and restarting the Payment Protection Program, which has saved countless small businesses.

Governor, First Lady DeWine Promote Flu Shots

With flu season approaching, Governor Mike DeWine reminded Ohioans of the importance of getting a flu shot this year. The Governor, along with First Lady Fran DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted, all received their flu shots.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older receive an annual flu shot, with rare exception. The recommendation includes flu shots for pregnant women, whose vaccinations can protect their babies after birth.

“While the flu can be deadly on its own, we also are concerned that Ohioans who get both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time could become severely, if not fatally, ill,” said Governor DeWine. “Our youngest and oldest Ohioans, those who are pregnant, those in long-term care facilities, and those with chronic health conditions may be especially susceptible to severe illness or complications from the flu.”

Those who are elderly and need help getting to their physician’s office can contact their local Area Agency on Aging at 866-243-5678 to access transportation resources and other services.

Anyone without a primary healthcare provider can visit vaccinefinder.org to find nearby pharmacies and other healthcare locations offering the flu vaccine.

Lt. Governor Jon Husted last week announced the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has received the “Customer Convenience Award” for the BMV “Get In Line – Online” system, which was spearheaded by InnovateOhio. The system allows Ohioans to check in to the BMV online before arriving to reduce the time they have to spend physically in line at the BMV. The project is part of the Lt. Governor’s and InnovateOhio’s mission to provide better services to Ohioans through state services.

Yost Discusses Possible Legal Action Against Big Ten

If the Big Ten does not play football this fall, Attorney General Dave Yost said he will recommend that Ohio State University file a lawsuit against the conference and its schools for tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue.

“I think we have a cause of action” for violating contracts between the Big Ten and Ohio State for illegal interference in a business relationship, Yost said last week. “If these negotiations fall apart, we will be recommending legal action to our client, Ohio State University,” he said, adding that his office believes the Big Ten lacked the legal authority to cancel the football season.

LaRose Fights Against Ohio Democratic Party Efforts to Weaken Election Security

With monumental steps taken by Secretary LaRose, Ohio has become the nationally recognized leader in election security. The Ohio Democratic Party, however, have attempted to dismantle this work through litigation. Their efforts would roll out the red carpet to hackers just three weeks before early voting begins.

Although the Franklin County Judge ruled in their favor, Secretary LaRose appealed to a higher court and this reckless, partisan effort has been temporarily halted.

It is clear that the Democratic Party is not interested in election security and will, in fact, go to great lengths to create an unsafe cyber infrastructure.

Chairman’s Update 9/06/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

The August jobs report was recently released indicating that our Great American Comeback is truly well on its way thanks to President Trump. Throughout the month, 1.4 million jobs were added back to the economy, the unemployment rate dropped to 1.8%, and August marked the 4th largest jobs gain in American history.

In addition to the great news about our economy, polling has been trending in President Trump’s favor after the Republican National Convention. Americans know Joe Biden would be detrimental to our nation as its leader. He has vowed that the first thing he will do is repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which many Americans have benefitted from. In addition to spurring our economy, President Trump is the only candidate standing up for law and order across our nation. Ohioans are ready to re-elect a president who has kept his promises and who has proven to be a true leader for our country, putting America First in all that he does.

I hope you all enjoy a fun, safe and healthy Labor Day, as we celebrate the social and economic contributions of American workers.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

In Cincinnati, Portman Highlights Victory in Expanding Paycheck Protection Program Eligibility to Second Chance Business Owners

U.S. Senator Rob Portman met with local business leaders last Monday for a discussion led by Innovative Labor and Cleaning Services owner Troy Parker hosted at a Messer construction site at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Parker’s company received a $235,000 Paycheck Protection Program loan in June thanks to Portman’s efforts to expand eligibility to cover Second Chance businesses owned by individuals who have a criminal record in their past but who have turned their lives around. Troy is an example of a Second Chance success story having started Innovative Labor and Cleaning in 2015 after re-entering the community. He hires others returning to the community, many of whom struggle with addiction and mental health issues.

The Paycheck Protection Program loan made possible thanks to the bipartisan CARES Act, which Senator Portman supported and was signed into law by President Trump.

DeWine Announces New Traffic-Safety Efforts

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced three new traffic-safety efforts aimed at reducing the number of fatalities on Ohio’s roads and better ensuring that Ohio’s young drivers have the necessary skills to safely navigate the streets.

  • Ohio Traffic Safety Council: The new council, led by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, will be composed of representatives of several state agencies and outside groups. The role of the council will be to coordinate and monitor all statewide traffic safety initiatives, analyze trends, and advise the Governor on creating safer roads through education, enforcement, engineering, and emergency response.
  • Work Zone Enforcement: Because enforcing traffic laws can be a challenge in work zones, the Ohio State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit, which already conducts speed checks from the air, will conduct targeted enforcement on crash-causing violations in Ohio Department of Transportation construction zones. The increased enforcement is in response to the nearly 9,000 work-zone crashes in Ohio between 2019 and 2020.
  • Juvenile Court Grants: Eight juvenile courts in Ohio have been awarded grant funding through the Ohio Department of Public Safety to help them provide young drivers more access to advanced driver training. Courts in Adams, Athens, Medina, Knox, Delaware, Miami, Fairfield, and Delaware counties will each receive $20,000 through Ohio’s new Youthful Driver Safety Fund which was developed as part of Ohio’s biennium budget.

The new traffic safety efforts are in addition to several other initiatives launched by Governor DeWine since 2019 including the creation of the Intersection Safety Program to improve the safety of 150 rural, urban, and suburban intersections across the state; the development of the “Ohio – Ready, Test, Drive!” program to help enhance the skills of new drivers; and the creation of several distracted driving corridors to reduce distracted driving in Ohio. Governor DeWine also worked with members of the General Assembly to introduce the Hands-Free Ohio bill, which is currently pending in the Ohio General Assembly, to strengthen Ohio’s laws related to the use of wireless devices while driving.

Governor DeWine also encouraged Ohio’s drivers to watch their speeds after Ohio recorded 154 traffic fatalities in July – the highest number of traffic fatalities in one month since 2007. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, one in three of those killed in July was involved in a speed-related crash.

Husted Announces Grants to Expand High Speed Internet Opportunities

Lt. Governor Jon Husted this week announced the state is distributing $50 million in grants to schools across Ohio in order to expand public wifi and hotspot locations, as well as send internet-enabled devices home with students who do not have access to high speed internet. This project will specifically benefit students who may need to engage in distance learning this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Hundreds of thousands of Ohio students will gain internet access as a result of the program. Broadband expansion remains a top priority for the DeWine-Husted Administration with nearly 300,000 households lacking access to high-speed internet, many of which are in rural Ohio.

Chairman’s Update 8/30/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

The Republican National Convention was an inspiring and patriotic show of leadership. In sharp contrast with the Democrats’ own doom and gloom messaging, Republicans reminded Americans of how strong and great our country truly is. The Democrats recruited Hollywood celebrities to their events while Republicans highlighted supporters from middle America and all walks of life. There could not be more differences between what has become a radicalized party, and the one which our great president, Donald Trump, leads.

From criminal justice reform and job creation to fighting China and de-regulation, President Trump has been a champion for every community in America. With plans to make the United States the manufacturing superpower of the world, anchor medical supply chains in our own country, and expand opportunity zones, President Trump highlighted an ambitious agenda for his second term on Thursday night. He is a president who always puts Americans, and America, first.

President Trump stayed true to his first-term promises. I know we can count on him to do the same throughout the next four years. The choice could not be clearer for voters, and President Trump said it best: “How can the Democrat Party ask to lead our country when it spends so much time tearing down our country?”

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

Portman’s Message on Importance of Re-Electing President Trump

During this week’s GOP convention, U.S. Senator Rob Portman reiterated why the presidential race is so critical to Ohio and our nation.  Portman, who was one of the first U.S. Senators to endorse the president’s re-election back in February of last year, released the following statement:

“Working with President Trump, we passed historic tax reform, drug treatment and recovery measures, criminal justice reform, and the biggest piece of conservation legislation in a generation.

The Senate has confirmed a record number of his judicial nominees – smart men and women who will not legislate from the bench. And working together we built the strongest economy our nation has ever seen. With COVID-19, now we must do it again.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are fighting for higher taxes for middle class families, job-killing regulations, the Green New Deal, and government-run health care. Their policies would be bad for Ohio jobs and bad for Ohio middle-class families.

Ohio and our nation need someone who will help rebuild our economy again, stronger than ever before as we recover from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and that’s why I support Donald Trump.”

Yost Announces $85 Million Multistate Settlement with Honda

Attorney General Dave Yost announced that Ohio will receive about $2.3 million from Honda as part of an $85 million settlement stemming from defective airbag systems. Yost and attorneys general from 48 states settled a lawsuit with Honda over allegations the automaker concealed safety issues related to defective airbag systems.

“I’d never buy a car if I knew systems meant to save me and my family could actually hurt us,” Yost said. “That is what Honda denied to Ohio consumers – the chance to make the best decisions for their families. This agreement will ensure that doesn’t happen again.”

You can read more about Ohio’s involvement here.

LaRose Busts Election Myths About Absentee Ballots

This week, Secretary LaRose posted a video busting an election myth that was circulating saying that absentee ballots in Ohio are not secure and confidential. As LaRose explains, in Ohio, this accusation cannot be further from the truth. Absentee voting is done right in Ohio. With signature matching, confidential envelopes and ballot tracking through VoteOhio.gov/Track, Ohioans can choose this option and know their vote will be counted. Of course, Ohioans still have the option to take advantage of in person voting this election through early voting at their county board of elections or at their polling location on Election Day.

Chairman’s Update 8/23/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last week’s Democrat Convention showcased what our country will look like under radical rule: $4 trillion in tax hikes, a radical immigration agenda, defunding police departments, and environmental policies that would wreck our energy sector and crush millions of jobs. The Democrats aren’t interested in doing what is best for the American people. They are only concerned with pushing progressive agendas that will be detrimental to families across the nation.

Americans should be concerned that Democrats refuse to stand up to violent rioters, instead choosing to bow to their every demand and allowing them to burn American cities to the ground. Unless, of course, the riots bring violence to the suburbs. Then Dems are happy to go on the record disavowing the chaos. The hypocrisy of the left continues to astound me, and should worry every voter out there. Democrats do not have true convictions and we cannot rely on them to protect our communities.

This election is crucial to the way American life as we know it will continue. This week, at the Republican National Convention, President Trump and his vision for America will stand in sharp contrast to the ideologies on display at the DNC. Democrats constantly focus on what divides us, but President Trump’s focus will be on what brings us together and what makes our nation great. If voters want to continue the Great American Comeback and feel safe in their own communities, the choice they have ahead of them in November is clear.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

AG Yost: Ohio’s Opioid Trial to Begin in October

Attorney General Dave Yost spoke with Cleveland.com last week following the announcement that Ohio’s trial against drug distributors over the opioid crisis is set to begin October 19. Ohio’s attorneys are arguing that drug companies distributed enough opioids to fill an average of more than 11.8 million prescriptions a year between 2011 and 2016. More than 7,200 people in Ohio died of unintentional opioid overdoses between 2011 and 2017.

“I like our case, and we want to try it,” Yost said. “We have more than 100 depositions, and we have truckloads of documents. I like the story that we’re going to tell to a jury. It’s compelling and heartbreaking, and I think that the jury is going to tell the distributors to open their checkbooks.”

You can read more about the upcoming trial here.

Chairman’s Update 8/16/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

Last week, Joe Biden announced that he chose Kamala Harris as his running mate. It is more important now than ever that we continue moving full steam ahead to November. Joe Biden has tried to market himself to voters as a moderate Democrat, but we know that is not true, especially with Kamala Harris as his VP pick. This is a radical ticket that will only be disastrous for Americans. Although she is in the company of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in the Senate, Harris has been rated the most liberal Senator in the country. She has said she wants to abolish private health insurance, but has struggled to explain how she would pay for her government takeover of health care without raising taxes on the middle class. Kamala Harris is a left-wing, radical progressive who is using her platform as Biden’s running mate as a launch pad for the rest of her career.

Americans care about having more money in their pockets to provide for their families, the ability to choose their own health care plan, and lower taxes. The Democrats’ radical agendas will make that impossible. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are out of touch with Americans. I am confident Donald Trump’s ability to achieve real results for the American people will result in another victory come November.

President Trump’s brother, Robert, passed away last night. I hope you will join me in praying for the President and his family during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

Portman Op-Ed in Cleveland Plan Dealer Highlights Bipartisan Bill to End China’s Theft of U.S. Taxpayer-Funded Research

In an op-ed published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Senator Portman discussed his bipartisan Safeguarding American Innovation Act to help stop foreign governments from stealing American taxpayer-funded research and intellectual property developed at U.S. colleges and universities. Recently, both FBI Director Wray and Attorney General Barr have spoken about the threat to American taxpayer-funded research and intellectual property from foreign governments, particularly China, which would be addressed by this legislation. In fact, FBI Director Wray announced that the FBI is opening a new China-related investigation every 10 hours with around 2,500 open counterintelligence investigations across the country.  In addition, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reported that 54 scientists have resigned or been fired as a result of a NIH investigation into American taxpayer-funded grant recipients’ failure to disclose financial ties to foreign governments, particularly China. In fact, according to the NIH investigation, more than 90 percent of the scientists had undisclosed ties to China.

There are already troubling reports that China, and other global competitors, may be trying to steal COVID-19-related research. The Safeguarding American Innovation Act, which passed the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee last month, will help prevent this from happening. For that reason, it was recently announced that this legislation has been included in Senate Republicans’ HEALS coronavirus rescue package.

Governor DeWine Discusses Safer Back-to-School

On TuesdayGovernor DeWine continued to stress the importance of masks, social distancing, and proper hygiene as Ohio’s school students approach the start of the upcoming school year.

“I have every confidence that Ohio’s schools will do everything they can to keep children safe, but any spread happening in the broader community will, without a doubt, be reflected in Ohio’s classrooms,” said Governor DeWine. “If we want our kids to go to school in person, to play sports, to be in extracurricular activities – it’s up to all of us to cut down the spread in our communities.”

Currently, Ohio has left the decision to individual school districts on how to approach the new school year.

According to information gathered by the Ohio Department of Education, 325 public school districts in Ohio are planning to return to school full-time which equates to approximately 590,000 students. A total of 55 districts representing approximately 398,000 public school students will begin the school year remotely.  Approximately 380,000 students in 154 public school districts will start the school year with a hybrid of online and in-person learning. Information on 78 public school distracts was not readily available.

Education Model Planned for Start of SY21

Dr. John Barnard from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Dr. Patty Manning from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and Dr. Adam Mezoff from Dayton Children’s Hospital also participated in Tuesday’s press conference. They discussed the prevalence of COVID-19 among children; how to prevent spread in schools by wearing masks, practicing social distancing, maintaining good hand hygiene, keeping surfaces clean, and ensuring good ventilation; and what schools can do if a student or staff member tests positive.

AG Yost Announces Felony Arrests in Child Pornography Case

Attorney General Dave Yost announced two Austintown Township men were arrested on felony charges involving child pornography last week. The arrests stem from an ongoing investigation by the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, which is part of AG Yost’s Organized Crime Investigations Commission.

“Child pornography never goes away in the internet age – it is easy to copy and multiplies in the darkness,” Yost said. “But child pornographers victimize no children in prison. [Mahoning County] Sheriff Greene and the task force are statewide leaders I’m proud to work with.”

You can read more about the felony arrests here.

While Democrats Play Politics, LaRose Assures a Safe and Secure Election, Guarantees All Ohioans Have Option to Vote in Person

This week, Secretary LaRose addressed the state to assure Ohioans about the safeguards in place to ensure a safe and secure election this November. In his Wednesday press conference, LaRose reaffirmed Ohioans will have the same secure voting options Ohioans expect with early, absentee and Election Day voting options.
Unlike some other states, Ohio has safeguards in place to ensure absentee voting is secure with voter ID requirements, ballot tracking and a ban on ballot harvesting. Additionally, the early in person and election day voting are not only safe but secured by layers of safeguards to ensure every vote is counted accurately on Election Day.
Meanwhile, Democrats have been on the attack, attempting to bring significant changes to Ohio’s election with less than two months before early voting begins. Thanks to Secretary LaRose‘s leadership, Ohioans can be sure that the results will reflect the voice of each and every Ohio voter.
Watch his full press conference here and tweet @FrankLaRose to voice your support for Secretary LaRose‘s efforts to ensure a fair election this fall.

Auditor of State Keith Faber this week announced the launch of an online portal for personal experiences with inconsistent or erroneous COVID-19 test results.

The office is seeking first-hand information from individuals who have received notices from the State or County Department of Health or a medical provider with experiences of inconsistencies in testing procedures including, but not limited to, receiving test results that were later reversed or receiving results for a test the individual did not take.

“It is important that Ohioans have confidence in the data used for making COVID-19 policies,” said Auditor Faber. “There are widespread concerns and reports regarding false data. I saw a need for us to verify the data being used to either identify data errors or debunk what may, in some cases, be urban legends. I want to stress that this portal is only for first-hand experiences to establish facts or disprove rumors. With this audit and portal we can provide valuable feedback to key policy makers and increase confidence for all Ohioans.”

The submissions to the portal will add data to the ongoing multi-state COVID-19 reporting audit that the office is conducting. In addition to the portal, the audit’s intent is for states to be able to assess their own data gathering processes and use of applied data analytics to mitigate virus spread, as well as to gain understanding from approaches taken by other states.

The questions were designed so that comparisons among states can be made after all reviews are completed.

The framework was conceived through collaboration from five states: Delaware, Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, and Pennsylvania with assistance from the National State Auditor’s Association.

The portal is available on the Auditor of State’s website.

Kennedy Interviews with Hello Lima
Justice Sharon L. Kennedy rounds out another great week on the campaign trail, touching 8 counties. In between events in Ottawa, Allen, Trumbull, Licking, Medina, and Ashtabula, Sharon met with local business leaders in Morrow, knocked on doors in Cuyahoga, and enjoyed Sunday services at Greater Love Baptist Church and Cathedral Church of God in Christ both in Cleveland.

Before her event in Allen County, Sharon sat down with Jerome O’Neal, host of local program “Hello Lima”, to discuss the importance of the Supreme Court of Ohio and her work beyond the bench – the Lean Forward initiative that advances the treatment of veterans in the justice system.

“Ohio has the sixth largest veterans population in the United States.  More than 1.9 million servicemembers have served in the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan.  Many returning home are suffering from the invisible injuries of war such as traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress, depression, and are self-medicating.  The Lean Forward initiative engages education and training across systems so that criminal justice partners know what services are available to help us identify and treat veterans and the invisible wounds of war.”

Chairman’s Update 8/09/20

Chairman’s Update

Good Evening,

We were so happy to have President Trump in Ohio once again last Thursday, to speak at the Whirlpool plant in Clyde. Ohioans love President Trump for his ability to stand up for Americans, keeping the promises he made to voters in 2016. To a great crowd, the president said, “We’re going to win Ohio by even more this time.” Given the contrast between President Trump and Joe Biden, I am confident that Ohio will stay red for the president in November.

The July jobs numbers recently came out indicating the Great American Comeback is fully underway. Throughout the month, 1.8 million jobs were added, exceeding economists’ expectations yet again. The leisure and hospitality industry added more than 500,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate dropped by nearly a full percent – the fourth largest one-month drop in history. President Trump has helped build a great American economy, and he will continue to do so as he serves another four years.

Our organization will be forming a temporary partnership with Ohio House members and candidates who will be on the ballot on November 3rd. I thank Speaker Cupp for choosing to work with us towards victories in November. We have the resources necessary to give attention to every campaign and candidate, and are excited to work more directly with all the candidates as Election Day nears.

Sincerely,

Jane M. Timken
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party

Portman Praises Trump’s Visit to Clyde, Ohio’s Whirpool Factory

In light of President Trump’s recent visit to the Whirlpool factory, U.S. Senator Rob Portman said the president’s trade policies have worked for Whirlpool and protected Ohio jobs there. Since joining the Senate in 2011, Portman has fought on behalf of Ohio Whirlpool workers against unfair trade practices. Specifically, Portman has consistently worked to level the playing field for Whirlpool and its 10,000 Ohio workers, including the more than 3,000 workers at Clyde — Whirlpool’s largest American factory. He was instrumental in the president’s decision in 2017 to take action to protect Whirlpool jobs.

Portman is the co-author of the ENFORCE Act and the Leveling the Playing Field Act, legislation that is paying dividends for Ohio’s workers, and he has worked closely with Whirlpool and its Ohio employees to combat unfair foreign trading practices. In 2012, Portman sent a letter urging the Commerce Department to defend Whirlpool, which returned all production to the United States in 2008. He also provided testimony to the ITC on four separate occasions on behalf of Whirlpool. In response to evidence of foreign companies dumping their washers in the U.S. market, the ITC heeded Portman’s concerns and penalized those foreign companies with anti-dumping tariffs. After foreign competitors moved production to other countries to avoid paying those anti-dumping tariffs, Portman advocated for Whirlpool’s Section 201 “safeguard” case to impose global tariffs on washing machines. President Trump imposed those Section 201 tariffs in January 2017.

Governor DeWine Launches Ohio’s Top Jobs Lists

On Monday, Governor DeWine announced the launch of Ohio’s Top Jobs List. The list combines Ohio’s In-Demand Jobs and newly created Critical Jobs into one list of prioritized job sectors.

Critical Jobs ensure that the state’s workforce supports the health and well-being of Ohioans, their families, and their communities. Governor DeWine made developing the workforce in critical job areas a priority because of their impact on the lives of Ohioans at every stage of life.

The eight career clusters include:

  • Children & Community Health
  • Early Childhood Education
  • First Responders
  • Lead Abatement
  • Mental & Behavioral Health
  • Nursing
  • Physicians
  • Wellness Research & Technology

In addition to creating the Top Jobs List, Governor DeWine announced the new career pathways feature on TopJobs.Ohio.gov. Career pathways illustrate the progress Ohioans can make within the career clusters and information on the skills and education needed for Ohioans to advance to the next level of their chosen career pathway.

Both the list and the career pathway feature are available at TopJobs.Ohio.gov.

Yost: More Than $500,000 & Fentanyl Seized by Narcotics Task Forces

Attorney General Dave Yost announced that more than half a million dollars and 1 kilogram of fentanyl were seized in southwestern Ohio last week. As part of an ongoing investigation, authorities with the Miami Valley Bulk Smuggling Task Force and Southwestern Ohio Bulk Smuggling-Major Drug Interdiction Task Force uncovered the drug trafficking operation. Both task forces are part of the Ohio Attorney General’s Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission.

“Drug traffickers aren’t staying at home during the pandemic – they are out actively working to smuggle deadly drugs into our communities,” Yost said. “This interdiction shows the relentless perseverance our task forces and law enforcement partners have to keep these drugs off our streets.”

Treasurer Sprague Announces #ABLEtoSave Month

Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague recently recognized August as #ABLEtoSave Month. The occasion coincides with a national effort to tout the importance of promoting financial security for people living with disabilities.

Through passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act in 2014, Ohio became the first state in the nation to launch an ABLE program. Today, Ohio’s STABLE Account program is thriving and has helped more than 18,000 individuals living with disabilities navigate their financial journey and obtain greater independence.

“As the nation’s first and largest ABLE program, our STABLE team works hard to grow the program and offer families a reliable way to save money and invest in their futures,” said Treasurer Sprague.

Kennedy Continues Sweeping Ohio
Justice Sharon L. Kennedy rounds out another full week traveling our beautiful Ohio with events in Delaware, Columbiana, Medina, Muskingum, Stark, Summit, and Columbiana counties.  While in Stark she spoke with employees at Advanced Industrial Roofing about the importance of our tripartite system of government and the role of the judiciary in that government.
On Friday, Sharon criss-crossed Medina with Senator Larry Obhof. Beginning with a tour of RICO Manufacturing, and an awesome event at a virtual gun range, her day ended her day by stopping at Sérénité Restaurant & Culinary Institute. Staffed by members of the Medina County Recovery Center, the restaurant is designed to give formerly incarcerated men and women a second chance. Having toured the facility a year ago, Sharon discussed with the Director the challenges Sérénité has faced due to COVID 19, as well as the success rate of the program.
“It was an awesome day in Medina with President Obhof,” said Sharon. “I loved the Engage Virtual Range shooting experience! And it was great to learn that they offer cutting edge real world shoot-don’t-shoot training to law enforcement officers and departments across Ohio.”
Justice French Gives Keynote Address to Home School Graduates
Judi was honored to give the keynote address to the home school graduates with the Christian Home Educators of Ohio.
Although the graduates had to stay in their cars for the ceremony, the honking horns instead of applause made it a unique and memorable experience.
